In short
We work across La Axarquía, the 31 municipalities at the eastern end of the province of Málaga, from Rincón de la Victoria and Vélez-Málaga to Nerja and the mountain villages. The asbestos-containing material is removed by a company registered in the RERA working as our subcontractor; we coordinate it and handle the rest of the demolition and clean-up. On steep rural plots access decides the method more than the size of the roof.
Our service area in La Axarquía
La Axarquía occupies the eastern end of the province of Málaga and comprises 31 municipalities. Vélez-Málaga is its historic capital and main town, and its coastal municipalities – Rincón de la Victoria, Vélez-Málaga with Torre del Mar, Algarrobo, Torrox and Nerja – make up the Costa del Sol Oriental. Inland, the comarca is mountainous: the Tejeda and Almijara ranges rise behind the coast to La Maroma, at 2,069 m, with villages such as Cómpeta, Frigiliana, Canillas de Albaida, Sayalonga, Árchez and Salares strung along the slopes.
We take jobs in every one of these municipalities, as well as in places owners name directly, such as Maro, Benajarafe or the countryside around Alcaucín, La Viñuela and Periana.
Typical uralita situations: from coastal flats to country houses
The coast and the hills produce two quite different kinds of job:
| Setting | Where the fibre-cement usually is | What shapes the job |
|---|---|---|
| Flats and townhouses in Nerja, Torrox, Torre del Mar | Rooftop tanks, downpipes, small terrace roofs | Community of owners, stairwell access, street permits |
| Country houses (casas de campo) on the hillsides | Corrugated roofs over extensions, porches and storerooms | Narrow tracks, slopes, distance to a vehicle |
| Farm plots with irrigated crops | Roofs of tool and pump houses, old irrigation pipes and tanks | Buried or half-buried sections, terraced land |
Many country houses here were extended in stages, and the cheapest roof for a new room or a store was a few corrugated sheets on timber or steel purlins. Those sheets are now brittle, often patched, and sometimes hidden under a later layer of tiles. Pipes and tanks are covered on our asbestos pipes and tanks page.
Steep plots and narrow tracks: how the terrain changes the method
On a hillside plot the main question is how the wrapped material gets from the roof to a vehicle without being broken or dragged. Asbestos sheets are taken down whole wherever possible, never thrown, cut with power tools or crushed, and they are packed on site before being carried out. Where a lorry cannot reach the house, the waste is moved by hand or with small equipment to the nearest point a vehicle can safely reach.
That is why we ask for photos of the access as well as of the roof: the width of the track, the last turning point and the slope between the house and the road matter as much as the number of square metres. For a full view of the process, see uralita roof removal, and for what usually goes on the roof afterwards, our guide to replacing an uralita roof.
Permits, waste deposits and who does what
The RERA-registered subcontractor prepares the work plan and files it with the labour authority of the province, which must approve it before work starts. We coordinate dates, carry out the non-asbestos demolition, and organise the separate handling of the asbestos waste (LER code 17 06 05*), which is never mixed with other rubble and is delivered to an authorised manager.
For construction and demolition waste in general, the town hall requires a deposit or guarantee that is returned once delivery to an authorised manager is proven – this is confirmed in the ordinances and forms of Vélez-Málaga and Rincón de la Victoria, and the amount depends on each ordinance. If the job also involves demolishing a building, check with the ayuntamiento whether a declaración responsable or a licence applies; our sister site covers general demolition in La Axarquía. Frequently asked questions
Can you remove an uralita roof from a house that has no road access?
Often yes, but it changes the method: the sheets are taken down whole, packed on site and carried to the nearest point a vehicle can reach. Send photos of the track and the last stretch to the house so the job can be planned realistically.
I have an old fibre-cement irrigation pipe on my land. Is that part of the job?
It can be. Visible or partly buried fibre-cement pipes and tanks can be removed by the RERA-registered subcontractor in the same intervention, as long as they are identified before the work plan is prepared.
Do you work in the coastal towns as well as the mountain villages?
Yes. Our area covers all 31 municipalities of La Axarquía, from Rincón de la Victoria and Nerja on the coast to Cómpeta, Frigiliana, Periana and the smaller villages inland.
There are tiles over the old uralita on my porch. Does that matter?
Yes. The tiles usually have to come off first so the fibre-cement underneath can be removed whole; this is planned as part of the asbestos work rather than as ordinary demolition.
Will the town hall ask for a deposit for the rubble?
For construction and demolition waste the town hall generally requires a deposit or guarantee, returned when delivery to an authorised manager is proven. The amount and procedure depend on each municipality's ordinance.
Can we deal with you in English from abroad?
Yes. You can write to us in English, send photos and documents by e-mail or WhatsApp, and receive photo updates while the work is under way.
What is selective demolition?
Taking a building apart so that materials are separated by type as it is demolished. It has been compulsory in Spain since 1 January 2024.
Is a rainy day a problem for removing uralita?
Weather can affect roof work and access, so dates are kept flexible. If the date has to move, it is rearranged with the RERA-registered company within its approved work plan.
What is a plan de trabajo for asbestos?
The work plan the RERA-registered company prepares for each job, setting out how the asbestos will be removed. It must be approved by the labour authority before the work starts.
Do I need a licence to demolish a building with an uralita roof?
Your technician checks with the town hall. In Andalusia demolition generally goes by declaración responsable, but protected buildings, protected settings and archaeological zones need a licencia.
